start with a scarf

Start with a scarf… or a dress, or a sweater, or any item of clothing that has at least two colours + add a neutral, if necessary, to create your palette.

Stick to just that colour scheme to create a cohesive look for your family’s wardrobe, from head to toe.

In the example, this mom’s scarf was inspiration for her family’s colour palette of raspberry, cornflower, + navy before adding a neutral: khaki.

Colour repetition is key for cohesion, but utilize it in a variety of ways (to avoid looking matchy-matchy).

This family has successfully done that by distributing cornflower across two solid shirts, a striped shirt, + the scarf.

Similarly, mix up the colours on the tops + bottoms (to avoid looking like a uniform of all khakis or jeans, etc.)

Here, two of their sons wear khaki cargo pants, while their mom is in navy jeans.

While this example scheme has a pop of raspberry colour, the same suggestions hold true for a monochromatic palette also:

  • start with one piece of clothing that has at least two colours

  • add a neutral, if necessary

  • use colour repetition

  • add variety
